Someone's 32nd Birthday

Today we celebrated someone's 32nd birthday. Weather was picture perfect, trees in full bloom, birds chirping....

I have a stash of these birthday matchboxes handy - you just take a Sharpie and mark off the right numbers, viola!

We did a river cruise from Regensburg to Walhalla, started at 10.30 and got to Donaustauf/Walhalla an hour later.
The boat stops right below the famous Walhalla, after a 20 minute hike we were up and had a breathtaking view.

On the next mountaintop lies a beautiful ruin of Donaustauf, a castle going back over 1000 years. It's absolutely gorgeous, and perfect for a nice picknick with some freshly baked cake and some red wine...

Walhalla looks pretty impressive, actually it is only two inches wide - as you can see in the photo!

This is Walhalla - the German "hall of fame", honoring such famous Germans as The Scorpions, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Milli Vanilli (just kidding!!).

We finished the day off (and ourselves) with a few beers and Schnitzel at the Spitalgarten. It's a very popular beergarden, right by the Danube.

Anyway, we had an awesome day...Matthias

Warm Wedding Welcome!

Today I want to show you how newly-weds are being welcomed in Bavaria.
We actually saw this a few times and wanted to share this funny tradition with you.

This house is just a few blocks away from ours - and you may notice that blue-white pole with a stork on top of it.
Coming closer we get a better look at this installation...

And then we can finally read the sign:

The stork, high up on the tree, fulfills so many children's dreams.
He can't do it all alone, you better help him out.
This tree won't be moved until a child is born.
If there's not three of you within a year,
you have to give us food and beer.
GOOD LUCK!

Talk about pressure! Can you imagine coming home and being reminded day in and day out that you have to have a child within a year - or feed a bunch of "friends"? Oh well, this is the way it is.

Fortunately, our friends don't are a bit easier to satisfy....

That's it for now...Matthias
