Munich - Traces Of The Past

In an earlier post I described some of the things we discovered in Nuremburg

Last weekend we visited Munich - and I stumbled across this:

The eagle looked vaguely familiar. And when I saw when this building was erected I knew I was right.

Chiseling off the swastika must have been a bit cheaper than taking the whole eagle off...

Kelheim in Spring

We've been to Kelheim many times - and we still discover new spots.
And when the weather plays along (as it did last Sunday) it's even better.
Check out our earlier trips to Kelheim.

This Sunday we visited the archeological museum, got some pretty interesting stuff from roman times, and beyond that. The Organ Museum was not open yet (they open at 2pm) - but we found this awesome brewery with a nice little beergarden.

The food was awesome, and the beer not too bad either.

Anyway, check this place out yourself!

Burning Bridges - Follow Up

Remember the bridge that got heavily damaged by a boat in March?
Now they finished removing the concrete/tarmac so you can actually see the twisted steel. It's clearly beyond any repair.
From Regensburg - ...

Now, remember that the gas burned only for half an hour, and there was no additional load on the bridge itself. And this is the result:
From Regensburg - ...

So why are there still some whackos out there trying to explain that the World Trade Center was blown up by the CIA (or the Jews or whomever), because the burning kerosine was not hot enough to melt and weaken the steel? Give me a break...

Ingolstadt

Last Sunday we had awesome weather, sunshine and warm. Perfect weather for a trip to Ingolstadt - just 50 km from Regensburg.
From Ingolstadt

We parked close to the New Castle and passed by this abandoned factory building - creepy and fascinating.

Then we went to the New Castle - shining bright white in the sunlight.

I'm still amazed how the knights could see through their helmets - and all the weight they had to carry. They were absolutely helpless once they were pulled off their horses...

The museum has awesome military artefacts from the middle ages all the way to today - suits of armour and machine guns. Old swords and Nazi decorations.

Some old fortification shows battle damage from more recent times: the scarring was caused by an air attack in WW2.

We'll have to come here again - just too much too see in a day...
